Tournament Angler Byron Velvick (“The Bachelor”) Joins Triton Pro Staff

Posted: 1/12/2005

ASHLAND CITY, TENN. — Arguably the highest-profile professional bass fisherman in America, Byron Velvick, has joined the Triton Boats Pro Staff. Velvick, 40, of Boulder City, Nevada, has had a successful 13-year career as a professional bass tournament angler, but he is best known to millions of television viewers for his appearances on ABC-TV’s wildly popular reality dating series,“ The Bachelor.”
Last year on the hit TV show, Velvick was selected by the show’s 25 female contestants to play the role of “The Bachelor,” instantly making him the most eligible single man in the world. On the show’s finale, he chose contestant Mary Delgado to be his bride. He and Delgado have not yet finalized a wedding date. “Taping for ‘The Bachelor’ took about six weeks,” Velvick said, “and during that time I couldn’t tell anybody not involved with the show what I was up to. When we finished the taping, I invited a bunch of my fishing friends to the show’s premier party in New York. They were totally surprised.”
Despite his celebrity as “The Bachelor,” Velvick is first and foremost an avid and accomplished bass angler. He holds the BASS three-day (15 bass) weight record with an astounding catch of 85 pounds, 5 ounces from Clear Lake in California. He has won numerous Western Invitational championships, won the U.S. Open on Lake Mead in ’91 and ’96, and took first place in Ray Scott’s Rolex/IGFA 2002 Light-Line Bass Competition. His is best-known for his prowess with swim baits, magnum-sized lures most commonly used in Western lakes for giant bass. The biggest bass of his career, caught in Louisiana, weighed nearly 15 pounds.
Although Velvick is new to the Triton team, he has crossed paths with the company many times during his professional fishing career, even applying at one point for a position as Western sales representative for the boat manufacturer. “Triton president Earl Bentz has been a friend of mine for years,” he said. “Even when I was with another boat company and had on their shirt and jacket at a tournament or boat show, Earl would always go out of his way to be cordial to me and wish me well. Triton’s tournament support technician would even help me out with repairs or equipment when I was in a bind, even though I wasn’t running a Triton boat. That just shows you the kind of quality people behind the Triton brand.”
Velvick, who will be competing on the 2005 Citgo BASS Tournament Trail, will be picking up his new Triton Tr-21X tournament boat shortly. “I can’t wait!” he said enthusiastically. “I’ve fished from dozens of bass boats, but this truly is the ultimate for tournament competition.” Velvick’s other sponsors include Mercury Marine, Lowrance Electronics and Motor Guide trolling motors.
